Pest Control

Here are some Tips and tricks to help you aid in DIY pest control.
  • SPIDERS

    1. Take an old stick, such as a broom handle (4-6 feet long) and tie or duct-tape a rag or towel on one end. This will form a slight ball. If you want, you can spray the rag with Raid or Black Flag; this would kill any live spiders that you pick up. This is not always necessary, since they will get wrapped in their own web anyway.
    2. Use a towel end up, go into the rafters, corners, ceiling edges and other areas the webs are, and spin your new tool through the edges of their webs. Remember a web has to connect on the edges, so don't just go whipping through the middle.
    3. Using a spin motion you wrap the web on the rag, and not just leave it hanging. When done throw the rag into the outside garbage.
    4. Repeat this about every two months.
  • COCKROACHES

Cockroaches can spread germs, make allergies worse and multiply at a record-breaking speed.
  • FLIES

Flies carry more than 100 pathogens that can cause dangerous diseases in humans and animals, such as typhoid, polio and tuberculosis!

FREE TIP FOR FRUIT FLY INFESTATIONS!

    Make a bowl trap:

    • Put a piece of old skinless fruit and some wine, or some balsamic in a bowl (think like the flies: what do you want for dinner?).
    • Cover the bowl tightly (no wrinkles) with plastic wrap.
    • Poke many small holes in the plastic with a fork. The fruit flies go in and can't get out (if the holes are too big they will fly back out).

  • RODENTS

Because rodents multiply so quickly, just a few can lead to an out-of-control infestation before you know it.
  • ANTS

Shut down the ant buffet. The reason ants are coming into your humble abode is because it's a free-for-all (or at least it was at some point in the past, and they're hoping it might be again). The cleaner you keep the house, the less they'll have to eat, and the more they'll look elsewhere for goodies.

    • Wipe down all Surfaces.Tables and counter tops should be regularly sprayed and cleaned with a mild bleach or vinegar solution. Sweep, mop and vacuum regularly.
    • Put food in air-tight containers. This has the added bonus of keeping the food fresher.
    • Keep the sink clean: no dirty dishes, no standing water for ants to drink, no food in the drain.
    • Put pet food bowls in a slightly larger bowl and add some water to the larger bowl, creating a moat around the pet food that the ants can't cross (too bad you can't put one of those around your house!).
  • SILVERFISH

Found in areas of high humidity, silverfish eat through paper and other items with high starch content.
  • FLEAS

Fleas feed on human blood through small bites in the skin. They can jump from your carpet up to your ankles and calves, and a female flea can produce up to 800 eggs during her lifetime.
  • TICKS

Ticks carry many serious diseases, including Lyme disease, encephalitis and typhus. They can live for over 500 days without a meal.
  • WASPS/BEES

    1. Start a campfire. Smoke usually relaxes honey bees and will make them less likely to sting.
    2. Have some fabric softener sheets handy. You might place a few on the table, or tie a loop to your bag, or something similar. The odor will keep away bees, as well as other pests such as mosquitoes.
    3. Divert the bees with marmalade. Smear marmalade on tree trunks or in small containers far from your picnic or campsite area. Bees love marmalade—they will join the feast and leave you alone.
    4. Don't wear perfume! The sweet smell will only attract the bees.
  • CRICKETS

House crickets can damage silk, woolens, paper, fruits and vegetables. They can eat almost anything available.
  • MOTHS

Female moths can lay up to 200 eggs, and moth larvae feed on wool fabric and fur, doing damage to valuable clothing items.

Mothballs are poisonous to humans as well as moths.
